10 Flowers to Keep Away from Your Cat!

Welcome to the HUABAR FLOWER blog! As much as we adore our feline friends, it’s important to keep their safety in mind when choosing flowers for our Malaysian homes. Cats are naturally curious creatures, and some of the most beautiful blooms can be pretty but deadly for them especially in the month of summer!

Here are ten flowers that you and your cat should totally stay away from especially if you're housemates.

  1. Lilies

Lilies are stunning and often associated with purity and beauty. However, they are extremely toxic to cats. Even a small nibble or a lick of the pollen can cause severe kidney failure in our furry friends. Keep these beauties out of reach for your curious cats!

  1. Tulips

Tulips are a springtime favorite, known for their vibrant colors and elegant shape. Unfortunately, they contain tulipalin A and B, toxins that can cause vomiting, diarrhea and depression in cats. Admire them from a distance away from your cats.

  1. Daffodils

Daffodils herald the arrival of spring with their cheerful yellow blooms. But beware, these flowers contain lycorine, a toxic alkaloid. If your cat ingests any part of a daffodil- it can lead to severe symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea and even convulsions. Best to keep these sunny flowers out of paw’s reach.

  1. Chrysanthemums

Chrysanthemums, or mums, are popular for their long-lasting blooms and variety of colors. However, they contain pyrethrins which can cause vomiting, diarrhea, hypersalivation and even incoordination in cats. A safer bet is to opt for non-toxic flowers to add autumn hues to your home.

  1. Foxglove

Foxglove is as enchanting as it is dangerous. These tall, bell-shaped flowers contain digitalis, a toxin that can cause serious heart issues in cats, including cardiac arrhythmias. Their beauty is best enjoyed in the garden, far away from curious kitties.

  1. Hyacinths

Hyacinths bring a burst of color and a delightful fragrance to any space. However, they contain alkaloids that can cause intense vomiting, diarrhea and tremors in cats. If you love the scent, consider using hyacinth-scented candles instead of fresh flowers.

  1. Amaryllis

Amaryllis are popular holiday flowers with large, dramatic blooms. But beneath their festive appearance lies a toxic threat to cats. Ingesting amaryllis can lead to abdominal pain, drooling and vomiting. For a pet-friendly festive decor, choose non-toxic plants like poinsettias (which are only mildly toxic).

  1. Crocus

There are two types of crocus plants: spring-blooming and autumn-blooming. Both are toxic to cats, but the autumn crocus is particularly dangerous, containing colchicine which can cause severe gastrointestinal distress, liver and kidney damage and respiratory failure. It’s best to keep these lovely flowers in the garden, away from pets.

  1. Azalea

Azaleas are known for their vibrant, showy flowers and are a staple in many gardens. Unfortunately, they contain grayanotoxins which can cause vomiting, drooling, and in severe cases- coma and death in cats. Admire these beauties outdoors, safely away from your feline friends.

  1. Hydrangeas

Hydrangeas are beloved for their large, colorful blooms that can last throughout the summer. However, they contain cyanogenic glycosides which can cause vomiting, diarrhea and lethargy in cats. To keep your home safe, consider displaying artificial hydrangeas or choosing non-toxic flowers.

While these flowers are undoubtedly beautiful, their toxicity can pose a serious threat to our beloved cats. At HUABAR FLOWER we believe in creating a safe and beautiful environment for both you and your pets. When choosing flowers for your home, always consider pet-friendly options and keep potentially harmful plants out of reach.
